Film examines dads' fight for rights
Michael D. Reid - Times Colonis

"We're bombarded with images of deadbeat dads and loners, and I felt someone had to set the record straight. They're (fathers) stymied by a system that doesn't work for them"
Their struggles are chronicled in THE DADS WHO FOUGHT BACK, Koster's hour-long documentary about the plight of fathers struggling for shared custody of their children within a family court system many believe is biased in favour of mothers.

Strenuously arguing for change, the film incorporates commentary on the divorce wars from the likes of Senator Anne Cools…..lawyer Carey Linde who expresses concerns about a rise in false allegations…and Dr. Warren Farrell, whose 2001 book FATHER AND CHILD REUNION reflects 13 years of research into how to best raise children of divorce.

"Asked if men are leaving the country to get away from support payments, Debois responded with a link to a Global Television website promoting a documentary about two men's access struggles against a system they believe has a 'deep and persistent gender bias against fathers'. The program notes fathers have gone bankrupt trying to gain access to their children. The documentary calls for changes to Canada's divorce laws to give more fathers more time with their kids. Andrew Koster, the producer/director of the documentary is a divorced father himself. 'Divorced fathers are presumed to be absent from the lives of their children by their own choice and often painted in the media as deadbeats or aggressors'.

So much for the theory about the size of a man's shoes. Length and width, we're told in THE NAUGHTY BITS, doesn't correspond to any body part.

The Penis is one of six episodes - next up are breasts, bums, eyes, lips, and the vagina - focusing on the body's most provocative parts.

Done with straight talk and healthy humour, the show's intro is even fun - the title's graphic lettering becomes lips, a bum, a breast, and all the rest…there's lots to enjoy. And learn!

Co-producer/director Andrew Koster pitched the idea as an offbeat alternative to the abundance of traditional se-themed shows in the broadcast universe. "I wanted to look specifically at the body parts and they're represented and treated by artists and photographers and how we've manipulated them…..we wanted to look at the scientific aspects and offer a cultural and historical point of view from the third century to today."

Koster and his production partner Brenda Kovitz decided early that a sense of humour was key, as in the opening to the Penis episode in which narrator Kristeen Von Hagen introduces it as "a naughty bit whose reputation far exceeds its modest appearance".

A sassy six-part series on the penis, vagina, breast, bum, eyes and lips, it will continue as part of the festival this weekend, and play out, bit by bit for consecutive weeks, exploring such riddles as "if size doesn't matter, then what does". Victoria based Andrew Koster says he made THE NAUGHTY BITS because he was tired of the slew of 'how-to' sex shows on TV. Instead he wanted to take a fun and entertaining approach to examining the human body's most essential sensual parts. The end result is a hilarious series that is also quite informative.
